Katherine A. Cavanaugh, 98, of Mason City, died Friday evening (April 25, 2014) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (May 3, 2014) at Epiphany Parish-Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City.

Burial will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation with public viewing will be held Friday evening (May 2, 2014) at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, from 5 to 7 p.m., with the rosary being recited at 6:30 p.m.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Katherine's name to Epiphany Parish Catholic Church.

Katherine Ann Lowman was born on Aug. 8, 1916, in St. Ansgar, the daughter of Jacob and Eva Lowman; she was one of eight children. At an early age the family moved to Britt where Katherine attended school. At the age of 16 she moved to Mason City to begin working as a nanny to a local family.

On Nov. 21, 1938, Katherine was united in marriage to Maurice Stephen Cavanaugh in Mason City; the couple would be blessed with five children.

Katherine was an accomplished seamstress and spent many years working for Wolf's Department Store in Mason City as their seamstress and tailor. She also made most of the clothing for herself as well as her family.

Katherine was a devoted and caring mother. After the death of her husband at the age of 44, Katherine worked countless hours to provide for her family. She was a strong spirited and independent woman who put the needs of her family above all else.

She was a member of Epiphany Parish and served in numerous circles throughout the years.

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her children, Elaine Pantano, Long Beach, Calif., Janice Mendel, Woodland Hills, Calif., Michael (Katie) Cavanaugh, Iowa City, Maurice (Liz) Cavanaugh, Alamogordo, N.M., and Rosemarie (Masaaki) Nakazawa, Los Angeles, Calif.; her grandchildren, Michael Pantano, David Sotelo, Travis (Dena) Cavanaugh and their son, Liam, Sean Cavanaugh, Devin (Sarah) Cavanaugh, Wesley Cavanaugh, Megan Nakazawa, and Michael Nakazawa; many nieces and nephews as well as extended relatives and friends.

Katherine is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two son in laws, Russell Pantano and William Mendel; and her seven siblings.
