May 28, 1936 - August 10, 2017

Richard D. Carney, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday (August 10, 2017) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A memorial mass will be held 10:30 am Wednesday (August 16, 2017) at Epiphany Parish- Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N Adams Ave, Mason City with Reverend Austin Wilker and Reverend Kenneth Gehling officiating.

Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 pm until 7 pm on Tuesday (August 15, 2017) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City, with a Rosary at 6:30pm and a Scriptural Wake to follow.

Richard D. Carney was born on May 28, 1936 the son of John and Veronica (Harty) Carney in Mason City. He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1955 before enlisting in the United States Army.

He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was fortunate never to face combat and his years in the service provided him the opportunity to tour Europe and see the world. He would regale his family with stories of seeing musicals and shows at the theatres in London and driving around Europe in a little MG.

Richard married Joan Jenson on November 14, 1959 at Holy Family Catholic Church. The couple was blessed with two children, Kevin and Laura. They were a devoted couple and rarely apart

He loved to watch old movies, eat good food, and ride around on his new riding lawn mower. He was a devout Catholic and member of Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church, never missing a mass, a life-long Democrat, and a union member. Richard had a great sense of humor, and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory is his wife, Joan Carney; daughter Laura Carney and her husband Barry Cullison and his grandson, Darby Carney Cullison (of Sherman Oaks, CA) ; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Veronica Carney, his son Kevin John Carney, his siblings, Bernadette Surat, Veronica Urdahl, Harold Carney, Donald Carney and Ruth Phillips, and three beloved and devoted German Shepherds named Max.
