Roger D. Carlson, 79, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 10, 2013, in the presence of family and friends in the arms of our Lord at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., Mason City, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 15, with Pastor Mark Lavrenz officiating. Committal services will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where military honors will be provided by the Mason City Veterans.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, March 14, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, from 4 until 7 p.m. and will continue one hour prior to Roger’s service at the church.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Roger’s name to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Roger Delano Carlson was born in Mason City on June 13, 1933, the son of Thomas and Eileen (Baker) Carlson. He was one of six children born unto his parents along with Tom Carlson, Kenny Carlson, Keith Carlson, Don Carlson and Grace Funk.

Roger was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Niles on November 1, 1952; they were blessed with 60 wonderful years together.

Roger had a long-time career at Armour and retired in 1985. Roger was a veteran of the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict which took him overseas to help with cleanup in Korea and Germany. During that time Roger received the rank of corporal. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his dog, Joey. Roger was also actively involved in the VFW as a lifelong member and donated to countless charities.

Those grateful in sharing in Roger’s life are his wife, Shirley Carlson; children, Cindy (Chuck) Paulus, Randy (Hong) Carlson, Penny (the late Jim) Claypool and Steve (the late Heidi) Harper; grandchildren, Rhondelle (Ken) Krause, Kyle (Amy) Edwards, Keaton Edwards, Roger (Kristin) Carlson, Amy (Chris) Hogg, Cory (Billie) Claypool, Brock Claypool, Zach Claypool. Ashley (Noah) Diekhuis, Shelby Harper and Heaven Harper; great-grandchildren Brighton, Madison, Jaxson, Camryn, Kaycee, Ivy and Avah; as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Eileen Carlson; mother and father-in-law, Carrie and Carl Niles; daughter, Heidi Harper; and son-in-law, Jim Claypool.
