Eugene "Gene" Dean Callaway, 64, of 716 N. 13th St., Clear Lake, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, 1:30 p.m., at the Evangelical Free Church, 1310 Hwy 18 W., Clear Lake, with Pastor Steven Cox of the Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors. Family suggests memorials to Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Gene was born Oct. 28, 1940 in Eldora, Iowa the son of Glen and Lola Mae (Heltibridle) Callaway. He graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1958. He served in the United States Marine Corps from July 4, 1958 to July 4, 1961 as a Cpl. E-4.

Gene married Judith Carole Gast on Feb. 11, 1961 in Steamboat Rock.

He was a law enforcement officer for a total of 40 years, serving first in Evansdale and Benton County, Iowa. Gene served on the Clear Lake Police Department for the last 27 years, retiring in 2002 as a lieutenant.

He loved spending time with his family and his German Shorthair Pointers. He enjoyed hunting, sporting clays, skeet shooting, five stand and fishing.

Gene said "Life was good, but heaven will be better."

He was a member of the Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Judy, Clear Lake; son, Chris Callaway and his wife, Alyssa, and their son, Lewis, Clear Lake; parents, Glen and Lola Callaway, Steamboat Rock; brother, Robert Callaway and his wife, Nancy, Eldora; uncle, Dale Callaway and his wife, Dorothy, Conrad, Iowa and his two aunts, Irene Naumann and Thelma McCall both of Eldora.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements
