LaVerne Elizabeth Calhoun, 92, Clear Lake, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A celebration of life service for LaVerne will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.

LaVerne donated her body to the University of Iowa anatomy department to help in the cure of diseases. At a later date she will be buried next to her husband in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy. 18 West, Mason City.

LaVerne Elizabeth Calhoun was born October 23, 1921, in Herndon, Kansas, the daughter of Otto J. and Elizabeth B. (Kirchner) Sattler. LaVerne graduated in 1939, from the Hendon, Kansas, High School.

LaVerne lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado before moving to Kansas City, Missouri, studying to be a dental assistant, where she met her future husband Richard.

She was united in marriage to Richard E. Calhoun on February 19, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas, and to this marriage two sons were born, Richard and Robert. Richard preceded her in death on February 20, 2001.

After their marriage in 1944, they moved to Clear Lake in 1946. LaVerne was very active in her husband's dental practice in Clear Lake.

LaVerne enjoyed gardening, flowers and playing Bridge.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, PEO Club, and was a reception and communion stewardess at the church for a long time.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Richard (Sandra) Calhoun of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Robert Calhoun of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren, Michelle Calhoun of Denver, Colorado, and Jeffrey (Carolyn) Calhoun of Renton, Virginia; her sisters, Alvina Smith of Atwood, Kansas, Eleanora (Jim) Romaine of Chanute, Kansas, Doris (Kent) Reiner of Palisades, Nebraska, Margie McLaren of Chanute, Kansas, and Bernidene Phannentiel of West Minister, Colorado; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; sister, Rosanna McAdams; and two brothers, George and Kenneth Sattler.
