The Mirror-Reporter "Cook of the Week" Writer Has Finished Her Last Recipe

Funeral services for Merna M. Deputy, 72, were held in the Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon. She died Saturday in a Mason City hospital following a brief illness.

During her 15 years on the staff of the Mirror-Reporter, she was variously in charge of circulation, as well as her popular "cook" feature, of which she did more than 500; for "Looking Back", obituaries, weddings, engagements and society items.

Merna often joked, "I'll probably die on Wednesday and my obituary will miss the paper." Her worst fear was not fulfilled.

Merna Marguerite Deputy was born Sept. 1, 1903 at Clear Lake the daughter of Harry S. and Bertha E. (Pride) Bell. She attended Clear Lake schools and was a graduate of Hamilton Business College, Mason City. She was employed in the Sheffield State Bank before moving to California. In 1924 she was married to Ivan D. Deputy II in Los Angeles where she lived until the death of her husband in 1957.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Ann Houck, Kernville, Calif; two sons, Ivan Donald Deputy III, Balboa Island, Calif;, Patrick P. Deputy, Orangeville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Earl E. "Hallie" Mack, Clear Lake; Mrs. Alfred "Carol" Josten, Garner and a brother Donald W. Bell, Sun City, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a grandson.

She was a member of the Congregational Church, Wa-Tan-Ye and Lake View Clubs. The Rev. Kenneth Ubbelohde officiated. Arrangements were in charge of the Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home. Organist was Mrs. Tom Reloar, soloist Larry Shaffer, pallbearers: Arleigh Eddy, Gerald Brooks, Richard Sutton, Don O'Neill, Robert Bales, John Steinberg and Herb Garlock
