John, son of Alois and Elizabeth, was born on November 4, 1929, on a small farm in Rochester, Minnesota. Growing up, he milked cows, raised vegetables to sell at local stores, fished the Zumbro River, trapped muskrats and hunted with his dog Boots. He graduated from Lourdes Catholic High School in 1949, where he sang in the Glee Club and played basketball and football. John married Ginger on January 13, 1951, in Rochester, Minnesota. She was the love of his life.

John had a long career in the shoe business, starting with Hurrle Brothers Shoe Company in Rochester, Minnesota, and LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and then at Stevenson’s and Brown’s Shoe Fit Company in Mason City. John tackled life with enthusiasm, whether he was fishing or playing cards, lawn darts or pool. He introduced his kids to his favorite trout streams during their childhood.

John would say the simple things in life are the best: the warmth of the sun on your face, the tug of a fish on your line and a good meal shared with family and friends.

John is survived by his five children, Steve (Jean) Braun of Prairie Village, Kansas; Lynn (Patrick) Walters of Johnston, Iowa; Teri (John) Sheehy, David (Dawn) Braun, and Lisa (Roger) Schinagel, of Mason City; brother Nick (Mary) Braun of Rochester, Minnesota; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other loving family members.

John was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings and wife, Ginger.
