15 May 1958 - The Tipton Conservative

Charles Edwin Hobstetter, who was Tipton's oldest surviving business man, died at his home May 10.

Born of Cedar county pioneer parents, he was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Hobstetter, and lived his entire 86 years in the Tipton community.

His death resulted from a stroke suffered April 29.

Following the trade of his father, who established a blacksmith shop on Cedar street in 1887, he and his brother, Art, owned and operated the business for 56 years. He saw a thriving and essential business give way to the modern machine age, but it was not until 1947 that he closed the shop and retired.

Mr. Hobstetter had served as a volunteer fireman, and a member of the city council. He was affiliated with the Order of Oddfellows, but had not been an active member in his latter years.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; four daughters, Mrs. Arnold Albert, Mrs. Walter Randall, Mrs. Raymond Maurer, all of Tipton, and Mrs. Ed Baldwin of West Liberty; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Cy Rickard.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, with interment in the Masonic cemetery.
