12 December 1918 - West Branch Times

The funeral of Mrs. Sarah H. Maris, whose death was reported Monday, was held Wednesday morning at the parlors of Reynolds & Van Nuys and was conducted at the late Mrs. Maris' request, by Rev. Charles S. White, a former pastor. Burial was at Mountain View.

Mrs. Maris' maiden name was Sarah H. Ball. She was the last of the family of eleven children of Benjamin and Hannah Ball and was born at Salem, Ohio, June 20, 1848. She died November 18, 1918, after a brief illness, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Gruwell, 574 West Washington street, Pasadena.

When but a girl she moved with her parents to Kansas where she grew to womanhood and for a time was a public school teacher. In 1867 she was married to William Maris. Four years later she and her husband moved to West Branch, Iowa, which was their home until they moved to Pasadena in March, 1912. Her husband died in February, 1915.

To William and Sarah Maris were born three daughters and one son. One daughter and four grandchildren survive her.

Sarah Maris was a beautiful Christian character; and ideal wife and mother whose heart centered in the home; a faithful worker in the Friends church of which she was an honored member of many years, and an interested and efficient helper in every good work. She loved life and enjoyed her friends, of whom she had a host. As life moved on and dear ones were gathered on the other side she longed to go to Heaven and be with her Lord and them. This desire she repeatedly expressed, both in speaking with her daughter and in memorandum left behind. She had planned in detail all the arrangements for her funeral and burial. -- Contributed.
