Thomas Montgomery was born in Belmont county, Ohio, Feb. 25, 1814. He came to Iowa, Oct. 22, 1852, and went to Warren county, where he stayed one year; then came to Cedar county, where he lived until the time of his death, which occurred in Springdale on March 8, 1903, at the age of 89 years and 11 days.

He was married to Sarah Ann Brand, July 10, 1834. To them were born twelve children, nine of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Three daughters alone are left to mourn a father's loss, all the other members of the family having preceded him to a better world, two daughters and one son having died in infancy, and the faithful wife and mother July 14, 1880. He was married to Sarah Wilson, Nov. 10, 1883, with whom he lived happily until she was called home Sept. 14, 1902.

His life was a long and useful one. He became a member of the Friends' church at the age of thirty-five years, and remained true to what he thought was right, until the end of his life. After the death of his second wife, he felt that his life's work was almost finished, and often expressed a wish to go home, although willing to wait the Lord's time. Truly, a fully ripened sheaf was ready for the Reaper's sickle.
