Lydia Harriett Yates was born in Saybrook, Ohio, April 11, 1839. She graduated from New York Conference Seminary and Female College on Sept. 18, 1861. She became an educator of note in Ohio and came to Iowa in April, 1863; settled in Muscatine county, taking charge of the public schools at Atalissa and uniting them into a graded school. She was the first principal of that school, and as far as known, the first female principal of schools in Iowa. She was married Oct. 7, 1865, to Thaddeus W. Maxson, of Springdale, and died at her home in that place Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1902, aged 63 years, 5 months and 19 days.
