13 March 1902 - West Branch Times

Ellen Smith was born at Dundee, Scotland in the year 1830 and came to America with her parents in early life. She was united in marriage with Joseph Steer September 3, 1856 and came with her husband to West Branch, Ia., where he had prepared a home for them. Nearly all their married life was spent in this vicinity. The names of Joseph and Ellen Steer are connected with the very earliest history of this place.

To them were born three children, one lovely little daughter was transplanted in early childhood from the earthly home to her Father's home above; two sons, William and Joseph E., still live to mourn the loss of a beloved mother.

Ellen Steer was a member of the Orthodox Friends church. Her husband, Joseph Steer, passed away from earth and its cares at San Diego, Cal., Nov. 13, 1895, and Ellen Steer was called from the seen to the unseen on the morning of March 4, 1902. The funeral service was conducted at the old homestead on Main street at 3 p.m. on the 5th, by Rev. Geo. Furniss, assisted by Rev. J. Y. Hoover.
