13 February 1902 - West Branch Times

On Jan. 31, Mrs. M. V. Butler was called to the bedside of her aged mother, Mrs. Rebecca Basey. She arrived at 8 o'clock and at 8:50 the angel of death entered and the spirit winged its flight to the realms of the mysterious unknown. We clip the following from the Keokuk County News of Feb. 6:

"Rebecca Ayres was born in the state of New Jersey, June 27, 1820. She came to Iowa in 1837, where she has since resided, and in 1837 she was united in marriage to William Basey. To this union were born twelve children, three of whom died in infancy; James A. Basey died in 1863 while in the service of his country. Eight children survive her: Mrs. Anna Sarvis of Rose Hill; Mrs. Emily P. Butler, West Branch; Mrs. Josephine W. Brown, Oskaloosa; George W. of Edgar, Neb.; Prudence J. Cole, Arizona; Presley L., Eda, Okla.; Chas. Mack, Afton, Ind. Ter.; and Andrew D. of Lancaster.

Mrs. Basey was a consistent Christian and a devoted wife and mother. At the age of 18 she united with the Baptist church and has since been a consistent supporter of its teachings. Her husband preceded her into the silent land sixteen years ago.
