26 September 1901 - West Branch Times

Lorena Ellen Barnes was born Feb. 23, 1876, near Lenox, Iowa. In November of that year the family returned to West Branch, where they resided until the year 1885, which they spent in California on account of the mother's failing health. During the year the mother died, and the father and five children returned to this place, where her life was spent in deeds of kindness and love for all she met. About six weeks ago she was taken with typhoid fever. All was done that loving hands could do to restore her to health and friends, but He who doeth all things well bade her come up higher, and on the morning of September 17, 1901, her loved ones watched her spirit take its flight to Him who gave it.

Her father, a brother and two younger sisters are left to mourn their heavy loss, the eldest sister, Minnella Esther having died November 22, 1900.

Her patient endurance through all her sickness, her appreciation of every kindness rendered and token of remembrance sent, like her life of smiles and cheery words, should remind us all that it is our duty to scatter seeds of kindness while we may, remembering that
"He who loves best his fellow man
Is loving God the best he can."

The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Friends church on Downey street. Rev. I. N. Rich, pastor of that church, had charge of the services.
