30 May 1901 - West Branch Times

Samuel Hamilton Barnes was born in Harrison county, Ohio, July 10, 1822; died at his home in West Branch, Iowa, May 21, 1901, aged 78 years, 10 months and 11 days.

In 1826 his parents moved to Knox county, Ohio, where he resided until the fall of 1869, when he came with his family to West Branch, where he has ever since been a useful citizen, loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a wheelwright by trade; in later years followed carpentering.

In early life he joined the Methodist church, of which his parents were members. March 1, 1848 he was united in marriage with Sarah Vore, at which time he transferred his membership to that of the Society of Friends, where he has ever since been a consistent member. It may be said of him: "I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day."

He had been in failing health about two years and on the evening of May 19 was stricken with paralysis. He leaves a wife, two sons, one daughter and eight grandchildren to mourn their loss, all of whom were permitted to be with him in his last hours. He was a kind and loving husband and father. The remarkable patience with which he bore his lingering illness will long linger in our memories. Never a murmur of complaint--his bow of hope was set above this vale of sorrow.
