25 January 1900 - West Branch Times

Died On Monday, Jan. 22, occurred the death of Friend Laurie Tatum, at his home in Springdale, Ia. The deceased was a pioneer of this vicinity and very highly respected by all who knew him. We call attention to the notice of his death in the Springdale items.

At last, we are sad to say, we have to record the death of Friend Lawrie Tatum. Last Monday was his last day on earth. At 3:30 p.m. of that day the spirit left the worn and suffering tenement to dwell in a realm where sorrow and death can come no more and life is unfading, immortal. Deceased was an early settler of this vicinity and during the years of his residence has been identified with its interests and progress. He was iminently a man of peace and sought to harmonize the conditions wherever he was placed. His stay among the Indians for a few years was fruitful of good results. He will be missed by all who knew him, young and old, for his good impulses, free hand and general worth. Yes, he will be missed but we cannot wish him back, since he has crossed the border to the brighter and better life. Sympathy is extended the bereaved wife and family.

1 February 1900 - West Branch Times

The funeral services of Lawrie Tatum were conducted at Springdale by J. Y. Hoover and W. J. Hadley at 2 p.m. on the 24th. The child of the Springdale pastor was dangerously sick, preventing him from attending. The sermon was preached from 1 Cor. 14-10. "But by the grace of God I am what I am and His grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain." The attendance was very large considering the condition of the roads. Lawrie Tatum was born in New Jersey. His parents moved to Ohio when he was about six years old. He came to Iowa in 1844 and settled near where Springdale now stands. He was married to Mary Ann Dean in 1848. She still remains with four sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a beloved and devoted husband and father. In the departure of this dear father and minister of Jesus Christ the church has sustained a great loss.

The red men of the forest have lost a most devoted friend and Godly sympathizer. Many of the blessings they enjoy today must be attributed to his untiring Christian energy. The world has lost one of its best and truest men. Our young men have lost a wise councilor and helper in time of need. But his works will follow him down through the ages yet to come. J. Y. HOOVER
