Valentine B. Thumm, of the Tipton community, passed away Monday at Mercy hospital in Davenport, following a five days' illness. Death followed a severe attack of appendicitis.

The body was taken to the Horrigan funeral home, after which it was brought to Tipton where funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. Interment will be made in Masonic cemetery west of Tipton.

The news of Mr. Thumm's death is a severe shock to the community, as few knew of his sudden illness. He was highly respected by all who knew him, and was an esteemed neighbor and friend. He was born Aug. 27th, 1877, in Maggs county, Ohio. He was united in marriage with Lydia Mathews, in 1898, in West Virginia. Mr. Thumm was a member of the Farmers Union, Walton League, the L.O.O. Moose, and the Church of God. He had been a resident of the Tipton neighborhood for 13 years.

Surviving besides the widow are one daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hill of Tipton; one son Luther, at home; a brother, John M. Thumm, of Davenport; four sisters, Mrs. M. A. Painter of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. R. W. Hagert, of West Allice, Wis.; Mrs. W. S. Kelly, of Red House, West Virginia and Mrs. Jack Becker, of Davenport; also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Thumm, sr., of Davenport.
