28 January 1875 - The Tipton Advertiser

DIED OF pneumonia, at Tipton, Iowa, January 21st, 1875, Mrs. SARAH W. YATES, in the 41st year of her age.

Mrs. Yates was born in Carroll county, Ohio, in June 1834, and was united in marriage with Hon. Sylvanus Yates in 1859. In the same year she migrated with her husband to Tipton, Iowa, where she has since resided and occupied a prominent and influential position in the community. Possessed of a finely cultivated mind and a heart largely imbued with the spirit of her Lord and Master, she was indeed a helpmeet to her husband, a blessing to her family, an ornament in society and a shining light in the church militant.

At an early age she united with the Presbyterian church, of which her aged parents, who survive to mourn their loss, have been exemplary members for more than half a century. Some ten years ago, Mrs Yates connected herself with the Evg. Lutheran church of Tipton, and manifested in all these years an undying interest in the prosperity of Christ's kingdom on earth.

It is worthy of remark, that so much had she endeared herself to friends and acquaintances that during her painful illness, friends and neighbors with loving hearts and gentle hands vied with each other in ministering to her sufferings day and night; and when at last her sainted spirit fled to happier climes and there remained naught but her lifeless form still beautiful in death, the tears that embalmed her remains, the concourse of people gathered in the Lutheran church to attend her funeral, and the deep sorrow that pervaded the hearts of the entire audience as they followed her to the grave, proved the high esteem in which she was held by all. Three of her children preceded her to the better land, while one son and two daughters, all of tender years, remain to mingle their tears with the husband and father, as they cherish in their hearts the sweet memory of one dearer than life to them. May the Great Comforter console and sooth their bereaved and troubled hearts and wipe away their tears with the blest assurance that "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." J.R.B.
