6 January 1927 - West Branch Times

Mrs. Ollie Inman, 28 years old and mother of five small children, died in an Iowa City hospital early Monday, as the result of a compound fracture of the skull, which she sustained when her husband struck her over the head with a sausage grinder last Friday morning.

The family resided on the G. G. Wright farm east and south of Centerdale.

Inman attacked his wife when she was calling a physician to care for him, he being in a drunken rage. After he had struck her he ran five miles to West Liberty and that evening was taken to Tipton and lodged in the county jail.

Inman regained his senses shortly after being placed in jail, it is said, and expressed keen anguish over his act. He asked if he had injured his wife and declared that he was ready to take any punishment due. A few minutes later his mind left him again and he is now believed to be insane.

The Cedar county grand jury convened and took up Inman's case. Inman is a veteran of the World War. He had not been a user of intoxicants, neighbors and friends declared.

Shortly before Christmas he took a trip into Johnson county in an attempt to find a farm, planning to move early in the spring. He retuned home with a gallon of alleged hooch, according to members of his family. The first of last week he became nervous and acted queerly, it was stated.

Thursday night Mrs. Inman called Dr. Albert Ady of West Liberty, when her husband went into a drunken rage. Inman was ill all through the night and in the morning while Mrs. Inman was phoning for the doctor, he leaped out of bed, and as she rushed from the phone in an effort to escape him, he struck her over the head with the grinder and then fled to West Liberty.

Dr. Ady and Dr. Leech soon arrived and Mrs. Inman was removed to the hospital, dying at 12:05 o'clock Monday morning. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at West Liberty yesterday afternoon.
