20 August 1914 - West Branch Times

Jacob Cook was born in Ohio, 10th month, 3rd, 1832, and died at the home of his daughter, Emma Smith, 8th month, 9th, 1914, aged 81 years, 10 months and 6 days. He was married in 1854 to Mary R. Carey. One child, Ella Strong, was born to this union, she preceding her father to the great beyond six years ago.

In 1860 he lost his first wife, and on the 31st of 7th month, 1864, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Pickett. To this union were born nine children, three dying while quite young.

He leaves his aged wife and six children, Fannie Bathurst, Casey, Ia.; Chas. Cook, Winterset, Ia.; Geo. Cook and Tacy McIntire, Stuart, Ia.; and Emma Smith and Eunice Morris of this place, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and loving father, also other relatives and many friends.

He came to Iowa in 1853 and went through the trials and difficulties of a new country, living in Warren county a short time, then moved to a farm northeast of Casey, where he resided for a number of years. Finally in 1864 he settled in Adair county, south of where Stuart is now. At that time there was no railroad there and many miles to the nearest neighbors. In the spring of 1903 he with his wife and youngest child removed to West Branch. He was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, and lived a consistent Christian life. Several weeks ago he was stricken with a slight stroke of paralysis and never fully recovered again. Six days before his death he was taken worse again and remained in an unconscious state most of the time afterward. A few minutes after five o'clock First-day evening, he passed away to be at rest, and we have the comforting assurance that our great loss is his eternal gain.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock Third-day. Interment in the West Branch cemetery.
