The death of Mr. James Sproat which occurred Monday morning at his home in Tipton, takes from our community another of its oldest citizens. He lacked just two days of reaching his seventy-eighth birthday, his funeral taking place on the date of his birth.

Mr. James Sproat was born in Somerset county, Pa., Dec. 23rd, 1830; spent his early days on a farm. He belonged to that grand body of men--so rapidly passing beyond, who went to the front in those dark years between 1861-5. He was a member of the 38th regiment of Pennsylvania.

He was married March 5, 1857, to Miss Matilda Filson and unto the union was born twelve children, three of whom are dead. In 1876 Mr. Sproat and his family moved to Cedar county, Iowa, where he resided until his death. His wife died January 22, 1894.

Nine children and six grand-children remain to mourn his departure.

The funeral service attended by the local G.A.R. and Relief Corps, was held Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian church, in charge of the pastor, W. Rollin McCaslin. Interment at Sand Hill cemetery was in charge of the members of the G.A.R.
