2 November 1893 - West Branch Times

A terrible accident occurred in Cedar Valley last Friday, which resulted in the death of Henry Fitzpatrick, a well to do and leading citizen of Gower township. He was riding in a spring wagon in company with another man and two ladies, when it began to rain, they raised their umbrellas, which caused the horses to start to run throwing Mr. Fitzpatrick out upon a barbed wire fence dragging him some distance on the rough wire he was almost disemboweled, his heart and lungs were exposed and chunks of flesh left hanging to the cruel barbs. He was carried to the nearest house and medical aid procured, but nothing could be done more than to relieve his suffering as much as possible. He died Sunday morning.
