19 March 1914 - West Branch Times

Joseph Allen Barnes was born in Deerfield, Portage county, Ohio, March 22, 1842, and passed from earth March 12, 1914.

He was the 3rd of a family of twelve children, four of whom survive him, James of New Milford, Ohio; Mirvert J. of Berlin Centre, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Notman of Alliance, Ohio, and Mrs. Sarah Robinson of Essex Centre, Ontario. He leaves a widow, Luella J. and four children, Mrs. Ethel Beers, of Islay, Alberta, Canada; Carl and Glen of West Liberty and Miss Hazel at home.

He moved to West Branch in 1878, where, on September 25th of the same year, he was married to Luella J. Kerr and since that time has resided in West Branch or Springdale. Mr. Barnes confessed his Saviour when a young man, but never united with a church.

He was afflicted three weeks ago with anemia of the brain, but was not considered seriously ill until two days prior to his death.

Thus passed a moral, Christian character, always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need, and a welcome to all. The world is better for the example and influence of such royal lives.

The funeral took place from the home in West Branch, Saturday afternoon, March 14, at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. W. H. Mitchell officiating. The interment was in the West Branch cemetery.

Among those attending the funeral from a distance were: E.C. Kerr, W. B. Ellyson and wife, Eb. Fogg, Elmer Conklin, Elmer Johns and Chauncey Butler of West Liberty.
