DIED--At West Branch, Iowa, on Thursday, March 26th, 1891, Elisha Haines, in the sixty-ninth year of his age.

Elisha Haines was born in Belmont county, Ohio, on the third day of June, 1822. He was married to Lydia J. White on Sept. 4th, 1844. To them was born six children, of whom the oldest, Isaac W. Haines, alone remains. His first wife died in January, 1856. He was married to Sarah W. Cook on Oct. 21st, 1858. To them was born three children, of whom the youngest, Addie M., is left to mourn with mother and brother their sad loss.

Brother Haines was a birth right member of the Hicksite Friends' church. He was converted at Lloysville, Ohio, in 1855, in the same meeting in which the now bishop Thoburn was converted. He united at once with the Methodist Episcopal church, and was before the time of his probation had expired appointed class leader, a position that he has held for over thirty-five years. In May of 1866 he moved to Iowa and settled at West Branch. For one year he attended church at Oasis and for four years at Brick Chapel. In 1870 the church was built here, starting with sixteen members. He was the first Sunday school superintendent and has been a steward and trustee ever since he united with the church. Brother Haines professed the experience of perfect love in a meeting held at Brick Chapel in 1868. He ever adorned his profession with a Godly life. As a Christian he was broad and liberal, always rejoicing in the advancement of the cause of Christ. As a Methodist he was loyal and devoted, a liberal contributor to all the interest of the church, his home ever open to hospitality, in him the pastor ever had a firm friend and valued counselor. To the writer during nearly four years he has been an advisor and friend. He was a subscriber to his church paper from his conversion. As a citizen and business man he had the respect and confidence of the community. The last three years he has been a great sufferer, but was sustained by the grace of God. Two days before he died he prayed for his loved ones, the church and the converted. He then called for a hymn and then requested his pastor to pray. After this night he grew rapidly worse and passed to the home above surrounded by his family. In the death of Brother Haines the family lose a kind husband and father, the church a tried and devoted member and the community a respected citizen.

The funeral services were held in the M.E. church on Saturday, March 26th, conducted by Rev. W. S. Craft assisted by the Revs. Garrison, Hoover and Hemingway.
