12 August 1909 - West Branch Times

Sarah W. Mott, daughter of John and Mary Hampton, was born in the state of Ohio, Dec. 2, 1832. Resided with her parents in the counties of Morgan and Belmont until her marriage to Richard Mott, April 8, 1852. In 1854 they bid adieu to their native state and with her parents, brothers and sisters and their possessions, moved across the country, locating in Linn county, Ia., where they endured the privations of pioneer life until 1859. She and her husband, with three sons moved onto a farm near Centerdale, Ia., residing there until 1865, when they moved to Jones Co., Ia., where they lived until 1906, retiring from farm life to their cozy home in West Branch, Ia.

During these years of active business life on the farm she was a loving helpmate, a devoted companion, a kind and sympathetic mother, a counsellor in the affairs of Society, filling and adorning the stations of Overseer and Elder for many years. The Society called her and her husband into the service of Superintendents of Olney school, at Barnesville, Ohio, and later at Scattergood Seminary, Cedar Co., Ia., where her unassuming, meek and quiet bearing endeared her to many hearts.

She leaves a husband, six sons and two daughters, one daughter having preceded her. She is also survived by two brothers, Edward W. Hampton of Lincoln, Neb., and Robert W. Hampton of Whittier, Ia., and two sisters--Eliza H. Crew of Marion, Ia., and Ann Hampton, who has made her home with her sister, since their mother's death in 1898, and has been a faithful care taker during the year or more of her sister's failing health.

The husband loses a loyal companion, the children a sweet and wise counsellor, the Society one of its strong pillars.

The deceased passed away on the morning of the 10th. Funeral was held at the residence at West Branch on the eve of the 11th, and the interment at Whittier, Ia. on the 12th.
