17 August 1911 - West Branch Times

Cornelia P. Hanson was born in Onondaga county, N.Y., December 12, 1836, and died at her home in West Branch, Iowa, August 11, 1911, aged 74 years, 7 months and 29 days.

She was married to D. E. McClellan June 1, 1859, in Battle Creek, Mich. To this union one daughter, Mrs. Mattie G. Stewart was born, who, with the little grandson, Edwin, is left to mourn her departure.

In May, 1865, they came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Johnson county, near the Scott church. In 1868 they removed to West Branch, where the family has since resided, with the exception of five years spent in Oasis.

Since the prolonged illness of her husband, culminating in his death on Oct. 18, 1909, she has been in very poor health, and although a patient sufferer, the loneliness of her heart and the weariness of her body led her to long for the summons to follow him.

Though of a quiet and reserved disposition, throughout her long life in this vicinity, she has held a place of high esteem in the lives of the people of the community, being the faithful helpmeet of her husband in all his identification with the public and personal welfare of the community. She has been identified with the life of the local Presbyterian church from its beginning, being a charter member.

Another worthy pioneer has passed from the life of the community, but she has had her part in moulding its character for years to come.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, the sermon being preached by Rev. C. P. Spinning, for many years a friend of the family, and one of the organizers of the church of which Mrs. McClellan was a charter member.
