11 March 1909 - West Branch Times

Born in York county, Penn., Dec. 2, 1825, and died Mar. 5, 1909, at the home of his brother Theodore, near Kerwin, Kansas, aged 83 years, 3 months and 3 days.

He removed from his birth-place to Mansfield, Ohio, where in June, 1846, he enlisted with the Ohio troops for the Mexican War and served one year, or until the close of hostilities. In 1848 he moved to Iowa and placed his land warrant on 160 acres in Louisa county, and soon afterward purchased 40 acres near the present site of Lone Tree. In 1860 he went on foot from St. Joseph, Mo., to the present site of Leadville, Colo. He was married to Miss Jane Morris, Mar. 18, 1862, and resided near Lone Tree until the spring of 1901, when he purchased property and came to West Branch, living here with his aged companion until Dec. 8, 1903, when death claimed her.

In early life he united with the Church of God and remained a faithful member until his death.

The remains were accompanied here by a brother and a nephew from Kansas. The funeral services were held from the Friends Church on Monday, Mar. 8, and were conducted by Rev. J. Y. Hoover, assisted by Rev. Laura Townsend. His remains were laid to rest by the side of his wife in the cemetery on the hill.
