7 December 1911 - West Branch Times

The following clipping tells of the death of a former West Branch citizen, F. L. Sullivan, who is well known here and whose wife is a sister of Mrs. Ida Campbell.

"Without warning the hand of death fell suddenly Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, taking the life of F. L. Sullivan, a respected and esteemed resident of Baker City, Oregon, his tragic end coming at his home on Valley avenue, a little after ten o'clock.

"Mr. Sullivan was attending a meeting of the Elks Lodge, and left the lodge room because of a sudden illness that came upon him after the session had begun. He was assisted to a chair in the parlors, and feeling somewhat better he started home accompanied by District Attorney W. S. Levens. He complained of feeling weak but on reaching home refused to retire, saying he would lie down on a lounge. Being seized with another attack of his illness, he was assisted to the bathroom by Mr. Levens, when his head suddenly dropped after a convulsive movement of his body, and he died almost as Mr. Levens carried him back to the lounge. Medical assistance was soon at hand, but too late. A ruptured blood vessel was given as the cause of his sudden demise.

"The deceased was 64 years of age and was born at Hampden, Maine. Going to Iowa when 20 years of age he was there married to Eva L. Ellyson. Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan came to Baker in 1896, the latter being engaged in the millinery business until recently. Mr. Sullivan was a member of Baker Lodge No. 338, B.P.O.E. and Gauntlet Lodge No. 8, Knights of Pythias, being supervisor of construction work on the Pythian Castle and for several years steward of the lodge. A man admired for his many good qualities and highly esteemed as a fellow lodge member by both organizations, his death means real sorrow to his large circle of friends. He had recently returned to Baker from San Diego, Cal., where he and Mrs. Sullivan have been spending the past year, his wife preceding him home a few weeks.

"Aside from his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Alta Levens of San Diego, Cal., and one sister, Mrs. Carrie Cook of 2345 Washington St., this city, survive him. The funeral was held Sunday, Dec. 3."
