Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Sarah J. Phelps of Meadville, Penn, Wednesday, April 30, following an appendix operation. Mrs. Phelps had gone to the hospital Monday.

For many years Mrs. Phelps, both before and after her marriage, was a teacher in the grade schools at West Branch, and she was known to many here who will mourn her death. A few years ago she went to her native state of Pennsylvania to make a home for her sister, Mrs. Teenie Burroughs, and a few weeks ago she sold her property at West Branch.

Sarah J. Phelps died at the Meadville City Hospital, Meadville, Penn., Wednesday morning at 4:00 o'clock, April 30, 1930, following a brief illness which resulted in an operation for acute appendicitis.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Tennie Burrows with whom she resided at 182 Boynton St., and Mrs. Harry R. Willey of Union City, Pa., and by three brothers, Alfred Pettis, Kellerton, Iowa; J. H. Pettis, Benton, Iowa and A. W. Pettis, Chicago, Ill.

Sarah J. (Pettis) Phelps was born and raised in Crawford county, Pa. At an early age she became a teacher in the public schools. Then she went to Iowa where she continued her work, locating at West Branch.

She became a member of the M.E. church and numerous orders, viz: Eastern Star, White Shrine, Rebekah Lodge, Pythian Sisters and Past Grand. All Meadville orders have shown due respect to their deceased member.

In 1911 she was married to Wm. A. Phelps of West Branch and in three short years he was called to the Great Beyond, after which she resumed her work as teacher. In the spring of 1927 she came east to make her home with her sister, Teenie Burrows.

She was a good, true friend, never complaining and always ready to lend a helping hand. She died not live to die, but died that she might live.

Funeral services were held at Fleming's Funeral Home, Friday, May 2, at 2:00 pm. and burial at Union City, Penn.
