10 January 1907 - West Branch Times

Elizabeth Stratton the second daughter of David and Ann Painter, and the last survivor of a family of seven children, was born near Salem, Columbiana county, Ohio, 6 mo. 10th, 1817, and died at the home of her daughter, Deborah S, Haines, 12mo., 24th, 1906, at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 8 days.

In 1839 she was married to Elisha Stratton, who preceded her to the heavenly home in the year 1884. Six children came to bless this union, three of whom survive. David P. Stratton of Puyallup, Wash.; Wm. M. Stratton of Newberg, Oregon; Deborah S. Haines of this place are left to mourn the loss of a loving mother.

In the spring of 1851 she, with her family, came to Iowa and bravely faced the hardships incident to pioneer life. She was a life long, faithful and consistent member of the society of Friends; was for many years as an overseer, and for over forty years held the position of elder in the church, always availing herself of what she felt to be a blessed privilege, to assemble with her friends for public worship and to the close of her life perseveringly attended meeting, even when her feebleness of body was such that it seemed hardly prudent for her to venture. Her last illness was of less than four days duration. She has lived an earnest Christian life, remarkable for her complete trust in the Fathers care. Those who know her during her declining years will remember her as one of the most beautiful Christian characters. Her Bible was her daily companion and its precepts guided her life and filled it with sweetness and sunshine to the last.

Services were held from Second Street Friends church on the afternoon of the 20th at two o'clock.
