8 December 1870 - The Tipton Advertiser

Died, near Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, on Friday Nov. 4th, MR. JOHN McCROSKEY, after a lingering illness of a few weeks, in the seventy-first year of his age.

He was born in the State of Virginia, Rockville county, October 2nd, A.D. 1800; moved to the State of Ohio in the fall of 1828, and under the pastoral care of Rev. Moses Russell, united with the Presbyterian church of Clifton. In the year 1856, he removed to the State of Iowa, and settled in Cedar County. His connection with the church was transferred from Clifton to Tipton, Iowa, where he remained in full connection until his death. For many years he was an exemplary and consistent member, adorning his profession by a godly life. When conscious that his life was drawing to a close he seemed wholly resigned to the will of God. He had learned from the Great Teacher, who alone can effectually impart spiritual knowledge, his helplessness and ruin as a sinner. The boundless mercy of God in Christ Jesus was therefore his great support. Here as a lost sinner was his only hope. At the cross he found peace and pardon, and now in his declining days the merits of the dear Redeemer, the promises of the gospel of peace, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit supported and cheered his declining life till "he fell asleep in Jesus," The like precious faith which sustained him will lend its solace and support to those who mourn his loss.
