6 August 1863 - The Tipton Advertiser

DIED On board the steamer "City of Memphis", at Memphis, Tenn., June 28th, 1863, CYRUS MORGAN McCROSKEY, in the 28th year of his age.

The deceased was a member of Company "C", 24th Regiment, Iowa Volunteers, in which he enlisted in August, 1862. He was a young man of irreproachable life, respected and beloved by all who knew him. Firmly believing that his country was entitled to his services, and if necessary, to his life, he cheerfully left a comfortable home, kind and loving parents, an only and beloved brother, and went forth to endure the hardships of a soldier. And a noble soldier he was; always at his post, in the camp, on picket, and amidst the din of battle. He fought at Champion Hill, near Vicksburg, and although he passed through the conflict without a scar, yet there, from over exertion and exposure, he contracted the disease which shortly afterwards carried him to his long home. Called away thus early in life, his flesh rests in hope, and his grave speaks the fearful price paid to rescue our country from the iron grasp of rebellion.--Soldier! rest in peace!
"No rude alarms of raging foes,
No cares shall break they long repose." R. C.
