18 February 1902 - The Tipton Advertiser

Word was received here last Saturday of the death of Mr. Silas Hoon at the Soldier's Home at Marshalltown. The remains were brought here for burial that evening. The funeral was held yesterday and was in charge of Wm. Beaver Post G.A.R. of which the deceased was a member. Silas Hoon was among the oldest residents of Tipton and at the breaking out of the Civil war he enlisted in Company A of the 5th Iowa which went from this place.

Silas Hoon was born in Sommersett county, Pennsylvania, June 8, 1831 and died at the Soldiers' Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, February 15, 1902, aged 70 years and 8 months.

He was united in marriage to Mary J. Johnson November 2, 1858, in Tipton, Iowa. Four children were born to them, two of whom are still living.

Mrs. Hoon passed away on February 22, 1887. Mr. Hoon has made his home with his son, and for some time at the Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown.

Mr. Hoon enlisted in Co. A. of the 5th Iowa Regiment, at the beginning of the war and served his country for some time.

Mr. Hoon had been in poor health for some time, but since going to the home the letters to his son were always hopeful; he never cared to burden them the real conditions. His son and grandchild were with him in his last hours and by their presence cheered him to the last.

The funeral was held from the residence of his son, in this city on February 17, at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. Frank P. Shaffer. The interment was at Sand Hill cemetery, in charge of the local G.A.R. Post of which he was a member.
