16 February 1906 - The Tipton Advertiser

Mrs. Mary Kauffman died at the residence of her son-in-law A. I. Dougherty in Springfield, Mo. on the 9th day of Feb. 1906, at two-thirty p.m., after an illness of several weeks duration. She was born in Schuylkill county Penn. on May 17th, 1823, and was united in marriage to John Kauffman in the month of December 1843. Mrs. Kauffmans maiden name was Mary Maurer.

Mr. and Mrs. Kaufmann emigrated to Iowa Territory in 1844 and settled in Cedar Co. near the town of Tipton. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom are still living; they are Samuel H. Kauffman of Tipton, Iowa, Esther Kauffman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sarah E. Gill of Iowa City, Mary A. Wilson and Nancy J. Dougherty of Springfield, Mo., and Mrs. Celia Fredrick of Solon, Iowa. Grandma Kauffman as she was familiarly called was possessed of an unusually bright and cheerful disposition which cast a ray of sunshine and dispelled gloom. She will not only be missed by her family but by a large circle of friends and acquaintances also.

The funeral services were held from the home of Mr. Sam Kauffman Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. J. Kent Rizer of the Lutheran church officiating. Interment was made at Cedar Bluff cemetery northwest of Tipton.
