Carl (Jr.) Craig, 87, Atalissa

Carl (Jr.) Craig, 87, formerly of Lone Tree and Riverside died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Church United, 1100 North Calhoun Street, West Liberty. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the First Church United. Burial will be in the Riverside Municipal Cemetery. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements. Carl was born May 4, 1922, in Riverside the son of Carl and Edna Sleichter Craig. He was a graduate of Riverside High School and was a World War II Veteran serving in the US Army as a medic.

On Sept. 25, 1945, Carl was united in marriage to Ellen O’Neill at Nolan Settlement, she died in 1951; he later married Rosemary Jones Wenman in 1954, they later divorced. In 1984, Carl moved to Atalissa and spent the rest of his life with his special friend, Evelyn Evans.

He had farmed his entire life, beginning in Lone Tree, moving to the family Century Farm in Riverside in the early 50’s. After more than 30 years farming, Carl retired and sold his farm in 1986.

He was a member of the First Church United in West Liberty, American Legion Post #457 in Lone Tree, Masonic Lodge and past member of the Moose Lodge in Muscatine. He enjoyed music, dancing, playing the organ, cards, shuffle board and traveling for more than 20 years with Evelyn to winter in Florida, Texas and Arizona.

Survivors include two sons: Richard (Mary) Craig of Iowa City and Perry Craig of Washington; one daughter: Carla Baker of Davenport; special friend Evelyn Evans of Atalissa. four grandchildren: Daniel (Tina) Craig, Matthew Craig, Travis (Autumn) Craig and Leslie (Alex) Baker Schlue; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ellen; two sisters: Eunice Stagner-Meer and Vera Creason; and a son, Larry.

[TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: The reference to "Nolan Settlement" refers to the area around the St. Bridget's Catholic Church, just over the northwestern county line into Johnson County. The first wedding in this obituary was probably done at St. Bridget's. Researchers should use other sources to verify this.]
