Obituaries – Howard Mercer
Howard George Mercer, 86, of Griswold died Thursday, April 28, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak. The son of William Charles and Ruth Elizabeth Howard Mercer, he was born in Elliott Sept. 28, 1907, and graduated from Elliott High School in 1926. He attended Iowa State College. During World War II, he served in the Navy Sea-Bees. His marriage to Thelma Beatrice Ritz took place Feb. 27, 1946 in Papilion, Neb. They moved to California, where he owned and operated Mercer Gradeall Construction, a heavy duty equipment business. He retired in 1978 and moved to Griswold in 1987. He had lived at the care center for about a year. Surviving are a brother, Carl William Mercer of Elliott; a sister, Mrs. Leota Gammell of Elliott; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, June 2, 1989, his parents and a sister, Helen Weckcasser. His body was donated to medical science and the cremains will be buried at the Hillside Cemetery in Elliott at a later date. Duhn Funeral Home of Griswold was in charge of arrangements.
