From Cass County Biography: Henry as a boy of fourteen, came from his native land of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, and settled with his parents in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before his marriage, he came to Stevenson County, Illinois, and later to Carroll County, Illinois, where several of his children were born. In 1876, Henry and family moved to Union township, Cass County, Iowa. There he commenced the improvement of a tract of prairie land, and resided upon it. He was a respected man, strong Lutheran and a well-to-do farmer.
From "The Anita Tribune" newspaper dated 29 November 1917: "Large Fortune Disposed of by Spies Will"
"An estate consisting of several Cass county farms, a farm in Pocahontas county and several thousands of dollars is divided among the sons and the daughter of the late Henry Spies of Cumberland. The will was filed on Wednesday in the office of the clerk of the district court.
The will of Mr. Spies, which is dated May 27, 1902, with a codicil dated Oct. 23, 1917, makes the following disposition of the estate:
To Henry Spies a quarter section farm in Union township, subject to $1862.50 which is to be paid to the daughter, Mary Spies Holliday.
To George Spies a 129 acre farm in Massena township, subject to a payment of $312.50 to be made to Mrs. Holliday.
To John Spies a quarter section farm in Grove township, subject to a payment of $1862.50 to be made to Mrs. Holliday.
To Alfred Spies the sum of $26,937 being the proceeds from the sale of land which the will originally provided should go to this son. Out of this the daughter, Mary Spies Holliday, is to receive $2,112.50.
To the daughter, Mary Spies Holliday, the sum of $6150 to be paid to her by the four sons, William, George, john and Alfred.
To Peter Spies the use during life of a 100 acre farm located in Pocahontas county, Iowa.
William and George Spies are named executors of the will."
Note Mary Spies Holaday is correct spelling of last name.
