DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS
Merl Doty, corporal, Company K, 117th Infantry. For extraordinary heroism in action near Beaurevoir, France, october 6, 1918. He volunteered and crossed an open space swept by fire from enemy machine guns and snipers to rescue wounded comrades.

Residence at enlistment: Route No. 4, Rockwell City, Iowa
