Monday Rites for Rembrandt Man

Funeral services for Vernon Peterson, 83, Rembrandt, were held Monday morning, Dec. 16, from Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rembrandt with Pastor Lyle Nielsen officiating. Mrs. Roger Mickelson was the organist. Pallbearers were Doyle Engebretson, Jeff Gibbons, Vaughn Haraldson, Erik Mosbo, Francis Peterson, and Richard Reuland. Burial was in Little Sioux Valley Cemetery at Rembrandt with the Sliefert Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Wilfred Peterson was born July 5, 1902, at Rusk, Iowa, the son of John and Ellen Monkelein. He attended school near Fonda until he was ten years old when his family moved to the Rembrandt area and he attended the Rembrandt school.

On September 4, 1929, he was united in marriage to Hilda Dlugosch of Storm Lake at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

To this union was born one son, Robert Vernon. Hilda passed away on June 6, 1942.

On August 23, 1952 Vernon was united in marriage to Clarice Lerdal at the Methodist church in Rembrandt. To this union was born three children, Candace, Murry and Sydney. Clarice passed away on December 7, 1981.

Vernon was baptized on January 13, 1904, at Rusk and later confirmed at the Little Sioux Valley Lutheran church near Rembrandt on May 6, 1928. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran church. He worked at various occupations, mail carrier, drayman, school bus driver, and at the Co-op Service Station until his retirement in 1967.

Vernon had been in failing health for several months and was a patient at the Buena Vista County hospital in Storm Lake where he died Friday morning, Dec. 13, 1985, at the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 8 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; and five brothers, Earl, Quentin, Myron, Curtis, and Hollis.

He is survived by his three sons, Robert of Alsip, HI., Murry and Sydney of Rembrandt and one daughter, Candace and her husband, Richard Reuland of Arnolds Park; one granddaughter, Megan Reuland, and other relatives and friends.
