Maurice Westmoreland
February 5, 1956 - October 23, 2018

Maurice Westmoreland, age 62, of Albany, New York, formerly of Albert City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Maurice was born on February 5, 1956, to Ben and Betty (Reigelsberger) Westmoreland of Albert City. He excelled at academics. After completing high school at Albert City Truesdale in 1974, he graduated with a B.A. from Lawrence University in 1979. Next, he furthered his studies at the University of Illinois (Champaign), earning an M.A. in Spanish and Linguists in 1981 and P.h.D. in 1990.

Maurice began his teaching career as an assistant professor of Spanish at Ohio State University where he worked from 1987 to 1990. Hired, next, as an Associate Professor at the State University of New York (Albany), he taught Spanish and Linguistics there from 1990 to 2018. In addition, he served as the department chair from 2014 to 2017.

Maurice cared deeply for his students and his colleagues. He worked tirelessly to support and develop the Spanish Linguistics department. A positive force in this world with his gentle nature, he, always, had a kind word of encouragement or a sage bit of advice to share. A good son and a loving brother as well, he will be greatly missed. On a final note, he loved his schipperke dogs, 1970s R & B music, indie movies, college football (Iowa Hawkeyes), and long trips on his Kawasaki.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Ben, in 2008, and Betty, in 2011, and his brother, John, in 1977. He is survived by his sisters, Paula, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Jean and Joan, of Saint Paul, Minnesota

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Varina.
