August 4, 1937 - September 28, 2018

Dolores Wabeke, age 81, of Newell, Iowa, died on Friday, September 28, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Dolores Elsie Goeringer was born on August 4, 1937, at Hull, Iowa, to Ewald and Esther (Reyelts) Goeringer. Baptized in August of 1937 by her grandfather, Rev. Edward Goeringer, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 16, 1952, she attended the Boyden Hull Community School, graduating in 1955. Then, she enrolled at Northwestern Junior College and graduated in 1957.

During the summer and part of the year, she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell at Hull. After graduating, she taught third grade at Melvin, Iowa. On April 7, 1958, she married Cornelius Wabeke. While her husband was serving with the U.S. Army, they lived in Dundalk, Maryland. That fall, however, they were transferred to Detroit, Michigan. While her husband was working in Military Intelligence, Dolores found employment as a receptionist for the Connecticut General Insurance Company. Then, in 1960, she began teaching fourth grade at Newell, Iowa, remaining there for many years as either a full-time or a substitute teacher. In addition, she worked as a librarian for the Newell Public Library for two years, and she taught Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and Saturday Bible school. She enjoyed reading, studying the Bible, participating in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), serving with the Junior Federated Club, attending basketball games and plays, eating out with friends, and keeping up with her grandchildren's activities.

She is survived by her husband, Cornelius Wabeke, and two children, of whom she was very proud: Cordell (Marcia) Wabeke, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Wendy (Michael) Dawson, of Springfield, Missouri; her beloved grandchildren: Abby and Cameron Wabeke and Emma, Jack, and Christian Dawson; and a brother, Lelon Goeringer, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, as well as by many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ewald and Esther Goeringer; her grandparents, Edward and Emma Goeringer and August and Frieda Reyelts; and her parents-in-law, Cornelius and Helen Wabeke.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Sunday, September 30, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in NEWELL.
