James E. Mittelstadt
January 13, 1926 - September 28, 2018

James E. Mittelstadt, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, September 28, 2018, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

One of seven children including Esther, George (Bud), Jayn, Marjorie, Donald, and Dean, Jim was born in Storm Lake on January 13, 1926, to George and Grace (Hughes) Mittelstadt. After graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He trained as a gunner on B-17 and B-29 bombers but never served overseas. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he enrolled at Buena Vista College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950.

In 1948, Jim married Patricia Holmes, a daughter of Forrest and Daisy Holmes of Storm Lake. Subsequently, Jim and Pat were blessed with three children: Mark, Jeff, and Lori.

After a short period of teaching school, Jim worked at Hygrade Food Products for seventeen years as a salesman of carload meat. In 1986, he changed his occupation becoming a stockbroker with Francis I. DuPont and later with T.C. Henderson, Co. After Piper Jaffray purchased this firm, he continued to work in financial planning for twenty-five years before retiring in 1996.

Interested in and active in many civic organizations over the years, Jim left his mark on his local community. His love of golf and his grandchildren's’ activities kept him busy after he retired. In addition, he had many friends and enjoyed his daily coffee group at the Pantry Café. For many years, winter trips to Pacific Grove, California, became an annual highlight.

Those left to mourn his passing include his children: Mark Mittelstadt, and his wife, Dawn, of Lake City, Jeff Mittelstadt, and his wife, Barbara, of Marcus, and Lori Calnon, of Monterey, California; his grandchildren: Michael and Amy Mittelstadt, of Altoona, Jena and Neal Bunt, of Ankeny, and Chad Calnon, of Monterey, California; and his great-grandson, William James Mittelstadt; along with many nieces and nephews. His cat Oscar also held a special place in his heart. Proceeding him in death are his wife, his parents, his brothers, and his sisters.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, October 1, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
