September 3, 1927 - June 13, 2018

Joyce Lucille Olbertz, age 90, of Sandy Springs, Georgia, formerly a long-term resident of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on June 13, 2018, at the Northside Hospital in Dunwoody, Georgia.

Joyce, a daughter of Forrest and Anna (Hayward) Crawford, was born on September 3, 1927, in Battle Creek, Iowa. The fourth of five children, she grew up on a farm and attended a one-room country school. Later, she attended high school in Ida Grove and Schaller, graduating from Schaller High School in 1945.

Next, she worked at the JC Penney in Ida Grove. On March 15, 1946, she married Peter J. Olbertz. The newlyweds began their married life in Ida Grove, later moving to Ogallala, Nebraska, before relocating to Storm Lake after a few more years, making their permanent residence there. Once settled in, Joyce worked at the Strickler-Spooner Variety Store as well as at the JC Penney in Storm Lake. In 1959, Pete and Joyce adopted a baby girl named Jill from the Florence Crittendon Home in Sioux City, Iowa.

An avid lover of cats as well as all animals, Joyce became a benefactor of the Humane Society. Her favorite hobbies included reading, doing crossword puzzles, and vacationing in Estes Park, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter J. Olbertz; her sisters, Annabelle Irvin and Beth Eyler; and her brothers, Floyd and Donald Crawford. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jill Olbertz, of Atlanta, Georgia, her granddaughter, Lolita Olbertz, also of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister-in-law, Margaret Crawford, of Schaller, Iowa; and her nieces: Lynn Crawford, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Ellen (Brian) Buchholtz and Ann Crawford, both of Prescott, Arizona, as well as extended family members and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Galva Township East Cemetery in Galva. Visitation will take place for an hour before the service at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
