Duane R. Miller
May 8, 1934 ~ January 5, 2018 (age 83)

Duane Richard Miller, age 83, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Albert City, Iowa, died on Friday, January 5, 2018, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Duane Richard Miller, a son of Vernon and Dora (Salveson) Miller, was born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, on May 8, 1934. He lived his entire life on the farm in the Albert City vicinity until he retired in 2012. He attended school in Albert City and graduated from the Albert City High School. While in high school, he participated in sports, playing football and basketball. He loved music and sang in the school and church choirs for many years as well as in the community choir of Easter Cantatas. As a youth, he attended Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City where he was confirmed as a young teen.

On June 20, 1954, Duane married Nancy Warnock at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Kim, Jill, and Sheila. The kids grew up on the farm, learning to help their dad with all the chores: caring for the livestock, feeding the cattle and hogs, baling the hay, and walking the beans. In 2015, the Miller family celebrated as their farm was designated a Century Farm at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Duane’s grandfather, Cliff B. Miller, had established the farm in 1915.

A member of the Albert City Evangelical Free Church, Duane had served on the church board as a trustee. He, also, served on the Albert City Elevator Board for nine years, actively took part in the Threshermen’s Field Days, and participated in the Pork Producers. Over the years, Duane enjoyed water skiing, boating, and motorcycling on his Hondas and Harleys. He, especially, liked watching his son, Kim, one of Iowa’s top riders, compete in motocross competitions. In addition, Duane loved to drive, and he and Nancy traveled throughout the United States by car as well as taking trips to Mexico City, Europe, and Canada (from Vancouver to Quebec), and by train to Niagara Falls and Quebec. They, also, spent five years as “snowbirds” in Casa Grande, Arizona. Very generous with his time and money, Duane loved to help others in various ways, both physically and financially. His capacity to love became most evident in his love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. Moreover, loving and cherishing his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he celebrated with them on their birthdays and at Christmas. Since 2012, Duane and Nancy had made their home in Storm Lake.

Duane’s life is cherished and honored by his family, which includes Nancy, his wife of sixty-three years; his children, Jill (Ken) DeYoung, of Laurens, Iowa, and Sheila (John) Arnot, of Winterset, Iowa; his daughter-in-law, Colleen Miller, of Albert City, Iowa; his grandchildren and great grandchildren: Heath (Shaylyn) DeYoung, and their children: Josiah, Caitlyn, Addie, Keegan and Taelyn, of Pocahontas, Iowa; Mark (Kari) DeYoung, and their children: Eli, Kanen, and Jase, of Huxley, Iowa; Nicholas Miller, of Albert City, Iowa; Rachel (Lieven) DeGeyndt, of Washington, DC; Jonah Arnot, of Portland, Oregon; and Kaila (Scott) Mowry, of Des Moines, Iowa; and two sisters, Carolyn Edwardson, of Boca Raton, Florida; and Pat (Mark) Vance, of Costa Mesa, Arizona; as well as other extended family members and the many friends he made throughout his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Vernon and Dora; his beloved son, Kim; his paternal grandparents, Clifford and Dora Miller; his maternal grandmother, Lava Salveson; his in-laws: Oliver and Marian Warnock, Donna Dwyer and Michael Warnock; and his cousin, Jerry Smith.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place Tuesday, January 9, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
