January 17, 1935 - November 14, 2017

Surrounded by her family, Joan L. Smith, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, November 14, 2017.

Joan was born on January 17, 1935, in Correctionville to Herman and Helene (Janssen) Feddersen. In 1953, she graduated from Battle Creek High School and went on to earn a teachering certificate at Wayne State College in 1955. Then, she taught school in Ida Grove a few years before marrying Frank Smith on February 1, 1958, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. Subsequently, they were blessed with seven children: Tom, Kim, Mary, Mark, Mike, Carol and Matt.

Joan loved farm life and enjoyed keeping the books for the S & S Farms for a number of years. She volunteered at the SOS Thrift Store and for many funeral dinners. In addition, she liked to play cards, especially bridge, and she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s extracuricular activities. Above all, however, she loved her family and treasured her time with them. She will, indeed, be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Tom (Sue) Smith, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Abby, Kelly, and Ethan Smith; Kim (John) Clay, of LaMars, Iowa, and Chris, Becca, and Kelsey Clay; Mary Smith, of Eagan, Minnesota, and Alisha, Quinton, and Marissa Natzel; Mark (Ellen) Smith, of Storm Lake, and Nick (Elizabeth) and Alex; Mike (Becky) Smith, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Nick, Max, Eli, and Gracie Smith; Carol (Matt) Fletcher, of Huxley, Iowa, and Sam, Ian, and Joe Fletcher; Matt (Cami) Smith, of Nixa, Missouri, and Cameron and Cole Smith; her sister, Lorraine Johnson, of Ida Grove, Iowa; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Feddersen, of Battle Creek, Iowa, Pauline Feddersen, of Anthon, Iowa, Joyce Smith, of Surprise, Arizona, Monica Smith, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Anne Reisch, of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Marilyn (Stan) Hall, of Arlington, Virginia; her brothers-in-law, Bill Smith and Father Jim Smith, of Storm Lake.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Helene Feddersen; her parents-in-law, Henry and Marie Smith; her husband, Frank; her brothers: Raymond, William, Les (Maxine), Herman, Kenneth, Ross, Robert (Pauline) and Eugene Feddersen; and her sisters: Hazel (Buford) Ashby, Viola (Ray) Coon, Helene (Jack Savage and John McDermott), Phyllis (Kenny) Luce; her brothers-in-law, Raymond Johnson, Cecil Smith, Ed (Pat) Smith, Joe Smith, and Don Reisch; and her sisters-in-law, Marvel Smith, Luella Smith, and Eileen (Bob) Martin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, November 17, 2017, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a vigil service held at 7:30 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery fund. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
