August 24, 1925 - October 12, 2017

Glen William Bauer, age 92, of Alta, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

A son of Fred and Elsie (Lamp) Bauer, Glen was born on August 24, 1925, in Holstein, Iowa. Growing up, Glen attended school in Holstein, graduating from Holstein High School in 1943. Then, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II. Moreover, he served as part of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier before he was, honorably, discharged.

On December 4, 1946, Glen married Jean Hummel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Delane, Diane, and Donna. In 1958, Glen and Jean moved to Alta where he worked for Becker Manufacturing for sixteen years before opening his own woodworking shop, Bauer’s Woodshed, in 1974. There, he made beautiful handcrafted wood cabinets and furniture until he retired in 2005 at the age of 80. He had a passion for taking a plain piece of wood and making it into a work of art.

Glen enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and having coffee with friends. In addition, he very much liked vacationing with his family, especially to the Black Hills. Glen treasured spending time with his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Jean Bauer, of Alta, Iowa; his children: Delane (Charla) Bauer, of Floral City, Florida, Diane (Ted) Gordon, of Swan, Iowa, and Donna (John) Trickel, of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren;as well as extended family members and friends. Glen was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and a grandson.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta. A private family burial will follow in the Holstein Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
