Mae E. Iversen
May 9, 1920 - October 8, 2017

Mae E. Iversen, age 97, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Mae Elizabeth Van Buskirk was born to Jesse and Helen (Logan) Van Buskirk in Allendorf, Iowa, on May 9, 1920. Baptized into the Christian faith at home in Allendorf, she attended grade school in Allendorf before moving to Ottosen, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. After attending Iowa State Teachers College, she taught at several country schools for four years. During World War II, she worked for the Army Signal Corps in Washington, D. C. and lived in Arlington, Virginia, with her sister, Jessie.

After returning to Iowa, Mae was confirmed by Rev. Bleeke at St. Johnís Lutheran church in Storm Lake, Iowa. On February 23, 1947, she married Gerald (Chris) Iversen of Storm Lake and joined St. Johnís Lutheran church with her husband. On their first wedding anniversary, their daughter, Kay, was born. A frugal person like many people who grew up during the Depression, Mae had learned to economize. During the early years of their marriage, she grew a garden, canned the produce, and sewed clothing for herself and Kay. Even in later years, she hated to pay full price for clothes and could always find a good bargain.

As St. Johnís congregation out grew its facilities, Mae and Chris became charter members of Grace Lutheran church. Mae taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, delivered Meals on Wheels, and actively participated in the Ladies Aid Society. A faithful member of the church, she helped when and where needed. In addition, she liked to take weekend drives with her husband to Sioux City or Omaha just to see new scenery or do a little shopping. In 1999, she started having some health problems which forced her to curtail some activities.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kay Iversen, of Spencer, Iowa. Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chris; and four sisters: Dorothy Holt, Jessie Kroeger, Vera Pressel; and her twin, Fae Berninghaus.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. and continue until the beginning of the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
