Lovenetta Hansen
December 12, 1923 - October 3, 2017

Lovenetta Hansen, age 93, of Alta, died on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, in Cedar Rapids.

A daughter of John and Johanna (Hermanson) Benson, Lovenetta Rose Benson was born on December 12, 1923, in Alta, Iowa. Growing up, she attended school in Alta where she graduated in 1941. Then, she went to Chicago in pursuit of fame and fortune. While there, she worked for Northwest Bank.

Upon returning home, Love met the love of her life, Melvin Hansen, whom she married on December 21, 1944, in Alta. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Larry, Debra, Anne, Jonathan, and Michael. She enjoyed staying home to raise most of her children, but after Michael was born, she started working again, first at the Alta Foodland for thirteen years and then at Breakpoint in Alta and Ken-A-Bob in Storm Lake. Baptized on June 6, 1960, at the Elk Baptist Church, Love joined the church, taught Sunday School for several years, and served as a secretary for the Ladies’ Aid Society. Nonetheless, on September 16, 1990, she switched her allegiance to Immanuel Lutheran Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed camping and cooking. The past seven years, she lived in Cedar Rapids with her daughter, Anne, who cared for her. Known as “Grandma Love” to many children and even adults, she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Larry (Lynda) Hansen, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Debra Bell, of Boca Raton, Florida, Anne (David) Rhodes, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jon (Melanie) Hansen, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Mike (Annvetta) Hansen, of Fairview Heights, Illinois; her grandchildren: Christopher (Ashley) Bell; Jeremy Frye; Alison, Benjamin (Tamara), Christian Elijah (Dawn), Halle, Marcus, and Noah (Nalopa) Hansen; Katie (Justin) Kruger; Kristie (Greg) Parks; Jody (Brad) Simpson; Courtney (Robbie) Rollins; Aimee (Lucas Peters) Ross; and Ryan (Jill) Ross; twenty-two great grandchildren; and her sister, Wanda Chase, of Alta, Iowa; as well as extended family members and many friends. Love was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin, in 1984; her grandchildren, Paula; her great grandson, Cash; her brother, Woodrow “Woody” Benson; her sisters: Marian, Beulah, and Ann; and a special friend, Arlo Nelson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 6, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the Alta Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Thursday, October 5, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Alta Church of Christ. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
