Iowa Hospital for the Insane, Independence

Does anyone out there know anything about the Iowa Hospital for the Insane in Independence, Iowa? Is there another reason that a person would be sent to the Iowa Hospital for the Insane other than that person being insane? An ancestor of mine is in the 1900 Census as a patient and he was only in his 20's or early 30's. Does anyone know if there is a register or some kind of book that would say why a person was a patient there? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
