Lowell A. Kress, 89, of Independence, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Independence.

Lowell was born on June 9, 1937, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Hazel (Butler) Kress. He grew up in rural Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1955. He later attended Upper Iowa University.

On December 27, 1956, Lowell was united in marriage to Betty I. Scott at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Together they made their home in the Cono Township area and shared nearly 70 years of marriage. Lowell worked as a bookkeeper for the Mental Health Institute in Independence and later for Greenley Lumber. He loved his work and was known for keeping meticulous records throughout his life.

Farming was always an important part of Lowell’s life. For many years, he farmed in the rural Winthrop area, where he milked cows and provided custom shelling and corn hauling services. His strong work ethic and dedication to the land remained with him throughout his life.

Lowell enjoyed country and western music, especially listening to classic artists and making trips to Nashville, Tennessee. He also looked forward to attending Jam Fest gatherings in Arizona. A devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, Lowell served on the church board and was active in church life. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and on the East Buchanan Telephone board. His faith was an important part of who he was and guided him throughout his life.

Above all, Lowell cherished his family. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. He also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Lola, who was a constant companion and a bright spot in his daily life.

Lowell is survived by his loving wife, Betty Kress of Independence; three children, Janet (Gerald) Fangman of Winthrop, Daniel (Jolayne) Kress of Winthrop, and Pamela (Terry) Dennie of Winthrop; eight grandchildren, Nicole (Jason) Ferriss, Austin Dopp, Ryan (Dawn) Kress, Jonathan (Janelle) Kress, Matthew (Kelly) Kress, Adam (April) Kress, Nicholas (Katelin) Dennie, and Kreslyn (Chris) Toyne; numerous great-grandchildren including Kiyah Ferriss, Kenzley Ferriss, Kading Kress, Reagan Kress, Gracyn Kress, Gannon Kress, Sydney Kress, Parker Kress, Owen Kress, Maevry Kress, Colter Kress, Hadley Ericson, Hazel Dennie, Hudson Dennie, Hilton Dennie, Jackson Toyne, Tyler Toyne, Allison Toyne, Asher Charterand, and Scarlett Charterand.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Hazel Kress; father and mother-in-law Lloyd and Marie Scott; brother, Brenton Dean Kress, a son, Martin Lowell Kress; and a great grandson, Luke Joseph Kress.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence.

Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton, Iowa.
